YOURS FOR A SONG

I don’t write song fic, but I always try to match the perfect song to any fic I’m writing. Which prompts the question:

What is Jack Bauer’s theme song? What song fits what type of fic? Something angst-filled, of course. Here are some candidates:

“Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” by Green Day: General angst

“Everyday Is Exactly The Same” by Nine Inch Nails: Day 6 Jack

“The Great Destroyer” by Nine Inch Nails: Torture!Jack (Jack as torturer or tortueree. It can work either way.)

“Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails: Herion!Jack

“Bird On A Wire” by Leonard Cohen: General angst

“Soul Meets Body” by Death Can For Cutie: Jack in China

“Everywhere With Helicopter” by Guided By Voices: Action!Jack

“Watch Me Jumpstart” by Guided By Voices: Action!Jack

“Windowsill” by Arcade Fire: Day 6 Jack

“Intervention” by Arcade Fire: General Angst

“The Well And The Lighthouse” by Arcade Fire: Day 7 Jack. Maybe.

That’s a start. What are your candidates for Jack’s theme song?

"Los Angeles" by Sugarcult. Every time that song pops up on my playlist, I'm like, "It's the Jack Bauer song!"

Hmm...there's also "Time is Running Out" by Muse, and "Somewhere a Clock is Ticking" by Snow Patrol. Those are good songs for just any old Jack in general.

"Somewhere a Clock is Ticking" There's a song with that title? Wonderful! * Goes to Limewire *

Yes. It's a song that's very befitting, I think, both in the mood of the song and the lyrics in general. :)

Oh, NIN is a veritable trove for this topic. *g*

I'm also really partial to Bush's Testosterone. The song itself is just badass as all hell, but the lyrics are so ironic, reflecting how Jack's plans usually backfire spectacularly (gas station hold-up, anyone?).

Ooh, and Filter's Hey Man, Nice Shot, especially in regards to Jack's disappearance after he helped bring Logan down.

AUGH, and I can't forget Audioslave's Shadow on the Sun — I can so easily see the first lyrics referencing Teri and the separation, and then it flows right into the end of Day One and the rest of the series, really.

And, I have to stop before I can't. *g* *clicks back to Quark*

Thank you for the links. Sometimes I get so bogged down in my own tastes I forget to explore other music.

How did I live without an iPod?

Ooooo I've never seen Shadow on the Sun! That is so omg. Yes. So Teri and the rest of the show.

I think it's sad that my first answer here was -- there's a song that isn't about Jack? *kidding, mostly*

"Behind Blue Eyes" by The Who (cover by Limp Bizkit)! Also "Devils and Dust" by Bruce Springsteen and half of 3 Doors Down's catalogue.

I could keep going, but I'll stop there. :D

Behind Blue Eyes. Good one. I used the photoshop eyedropper tool on the eyeball in my moofoot icon, and the eyeball read green. But his eyes usually look blue. Or he has one of each.

Great. Now I have go look at photos of Kiefer’s face. Oh, the hardships I must endure in the name of research. * Goes off to endure more hardship. *

YES. Boulevard of Broken Dreams is so....and HURT! And you have so many good choices there that I just am nodding in agreement.

Everyday is Exactly the Same is so so so day 6.

I'd also say "The Line Begins to Blur" for undercoverday3!Jack

And I found this Chris Cornell song; Ghosts that screams post day 6 Jack to me.

This song by Five Finger Death Punch: Ashes - especially this line: "I'm an egocentric masochist with a sadist's point of bleak" - not that Jack's egocentric but it just fits.

And so many Shinedown songs - Shinedown that I can't even.

Also Foo Fighters like "There Goes My Hero" or "The Pretender".

I could go on...

Just read the lyrics to "Ghosts." So very perfect. Especially this line:

You've looked in these eyes before
And all you saw was blue green water

It’s amazing how some lyrics just fit a character and his situation so perfectly.

Superman's Song by the Crash Test Dummies, definitely, for any time after Day 1, but especially Day 6 after he's told that Audrey is dead. It just captures the angst and the honour so well:

Hey Bob, Supe had a straight job
Even though he could have smashed through any bank
In the United States, he had the strength, but he would not
Folks said his family were all dead
Their planet crumbled but Superman, he forced himself
To carry on, forget Krypton, and keep going

Another one is "Man of Steel" by Sufan Stevans. The song is about Superman, but it could be about Jack as well.

The angst. The sweet, sweet angst.

Oh! Oh! I know -- Sex Bomb by Tom Jones. Someone made a lovely video of it with footage from Desert Saints. It's better than the real movie.

Good photo of the eyes, too. It looks like his right eye is half green, half blue. Mmmm....
