Title: While Jack Slept
Author: marinw
Rating: R for angst
Characters: Renee, Chloe, Janice, Jack
Summary: Immediately Post Day 7. Renee faces the consequences.
Disclaimer: 24 is the property of Fox
A/N: A VERY late response to an armbell prompt. Thanks as always to my beta cybertoothtiger.

She stood absolutely still as the medics wheeled Wilson out of the FBI interrogation room.

A moment latter two security guards appeared with their handcuffs. Renee didn’t resist. She kept her silence as she was loaded into the police wagon and reprimanded into federal custody, to holding centre where federal prisoners where kept until frmal charges where laid. Today it was a busy place: Tony Almieda was there. So was Olivia Taylor, although Renee wouldn’t learn that until much later. It was the same location where Wilson had been slated to go before Renee’s intervention.

Try to make decisions you can live with

Renee wondered if this is what Jack meant.

••••

Renee remained in detention for 24 hours. It was a much slower 24 hours then the previous day. She sat on the edge of her cot wearing the oversize jumpsuit, her face an hair still covered with blood because they wouldn’t let her take a shower.

Eventually she slept even though the lights of her cell where never turned off.

She was awakened when the door opened. She recognized the attorney who was on FBI retainer. He got right to the point:

“Wilson is going to make it, so the president intervened on your behalf. There will be no formal charges. But your career is over.”

••••

The guard gave Renee her dirty clothes back. She had just enough cash to take a taxi back to her apartment. She slipped out of her jeans and sweater and went into the bathroom. She made the shower as hot as she could stand it. Or slightly hotter. Not until she was under the water did she allow herself to scream.

Wrapped in her favorite bathrobe, she padded into the living room. Her answering machine was blinking. It must have been her lawyer, or someone else from the FBI. She pressed the button.

“Um, hi Renee, it’s Chloe. I heard you just got out of jail. So in case you’re wondering Jack isn’t dead. Not yet anyway. They’re trying some experimental stem-cell thing. It seems kind of sketchy but Kim insisted. Thought you would like to know. Okay, bye.”

Renee allowed herself the tiniest sliver of hope.

••••

The next day Renee went to the FBI for what would be the last time. She gave her official statement. A security guard let her back into her office long enough for her to gather a few of her personal effects.

On her way out, she spotted Janice. Janice turned her head away from Renee. No one would speak to her. No one would even look at her.

For the first time Renee realized how much she missed Larry.

Driving away from the drab office building was almost like leaving her childhood home. The downtown precinct had been a haven of normality after her time with the Russian Mob. She had been able to put on a suit and sit in her office, to confine Vladimir and his cohorts to a remote corner of her mind she tried to never visit.

The stability of her job was what saved her. She loved her career. Now it was gone.

••••

She visited the hospital only once.

He looked even smaller than she remembered. He was still unconscious and attached to a number of machines.

Coming here was a mistake. She couldn’t handle it. She left before Kim returned.

••••

Some weeks later Renee heard that Jack had been transferred to New York’s prestigious John Keeler Rehabilitation Centre.

Renee was relieved. Not just that Jack’s prospects for recovery were promising, but that she wouldn’t have to see him again.

Renee had half-convinced herself that she didn’t care what anyone else thought of her. Everyone except Larry. And Jack. Now, His opinion was the only one that mattered. Strange, as she had known him for exactly one day.

Now he was gone.

Renee was still here.

That whole message captured Chloe's awkard bluntness perfectly!
