THE BEAST IN CHAINS 2/4

posted in 24_fanfic

Title: The Beast In Chains, Chapter 2
Author: marinw
Rating: R for torture, violence and language.
Characters: Larry(in Flashback)/Renee/Pavel/Chloe/Cole
Summary: Day 8 AU, from the last act of 8x17. Renee interrogates Pavel.
Disclaimer: 24 is the property of Fox, whose creation I both love and hate.
A/N: A WIP denial-fic because I like to pretend that the back third of Day 8 never happened, or at least happened differently. Thanks to my beta cybertoothtiger.
A/N 2: Yep. I wrote a torture-porn fic. It was bound to happen eventually in this fandom. If you feel squicky on the issue click no further.

Renee tried to remember the speech Larry had made to the new recruits the day she had joined the FBI:

“There will come a time when you will need to use force. Restrain a suspect. Defend yourself against an attacker. Perhaps you will even need to fire your weapon. When you do need to act, don’t hesitate. But remember not to use force unless you have no other options. You have all taken an oath to obey the law and obey the rules. The rules are what make us better.

In the adrenaline of the moment we are all capable of great violence. It can be an empowering experience. Even addictive. But it can so easily spin out of control. The violence within us can take over even the best agents if we are not vigilant. The monster is part of all of us. We need this part of ourselves to do our jobs. But control the monster. Keep the beast in chains.”

Renee had been fresh out of the Academy when she heard that speech. By the time she had completed her undercover work with the Russian mob she had all but forgotten it.

Today she had wanted to interrogate Pavel herself, on the spot where she had made the arrest, with whatever materials she could find. She had stopped herself, barely, just long enough for her to call CTU and request a pickup.

Now the rage was returning.

The door to the CTU interrogation capsule slid open as Renee entered. Pavel Tokarev sat handcuffed to a chair.

Renee would have laid down her badge if she still had one.

••••

“This is a bad idea. You know what she did to Alan Wilson.” Cole said. He and Chloe were studying the monitor outside the capsule.

“This is different. This is a controlled interrogation. If Renee goes too far we’ll pull her out,” Chloe responded.

“We don’t need to do this. We have Dana’s audio file.”

“The conspiracy may go higher up than Tokarev. If we want to expose the Russians we need to get Tokarev to talk. And I don’t think the president is in any mood to sign another immunity agreement.”

“With all due respect, I think you’re letting your loyalty to Jack cloud your judgment. You want revenge as much as Renee does.”

“Shut up Cole.”

••••

Renee stood near Pavel, taking full advantage the height differential made possible by Renee standing and Pavel sitting.

“I saw the rifle you shot my friend with,” Renee began, “A Springfield. With a .308 round. From where you were positioned you had an easy shot. You could have killed me easily. But instead you shot Jack. Just above his stomach, so that he would bleed out slowly. You wanted him to suffer. You wanted me to watch him suffer.”

Renee leaned closer to Evan. “Let me tell you something. The man you shot. He’s more than my friend. But you already know that, don’t you?”

“Yes. I saw you fuck your boyfriend like a whore. Too bad you were not so friendly with Vladimir. If you were he would not have needed to hit you.”

Renee slammed Pavel’s face into the soft white surface of the table.

••••

“We need to pull her out now,” said Cole.

“Let her work,” replied Chloe.

••••

“You’re not very good. You know that? I was able to get Jack to the hospital.”

“He will not live long. Too much blood.”

“You want blood? I’ll give you blood.” Renee punched Pavel in the nose.

“Who ordered the hit?” She demanded.

Pavel spat in Renee’s face. Renee wiped away the blood-spiked spittle with the sleeve of her too-big blouse, an item of clothing borrowed from a kind intern.

She wanted to go so much further. But Chloe and Cole were watching. Renee sat down in the other chair and leaned towards Pavel.

“Shooting a federal agent carries a huge penalty. Don’t think your diplomatic status will protect you. Tell me who ordered the hit and your co-operation will be taken into account.”

“You do not know that, you bitch.”

“Don’t play with me. Who ordered the hit!?

Pavel snorted. “You think you are so important. That someone big would want you dead.”

“So you’re telling me you were working alone.”

“I tell you nothing. I want lawyer.”

“Give me a name!”

Pavel glared.

“Okay. Fine.” Renee withdrew a handgun from her waistband. She turned her back to Pavel and fired into the wall.

••••

“What the hell? How did she get a gun?” Asked Cole.

“Relax. They’re blanks,” said Chloe

“Blanks can still do a lot of damage.”

“I know.”

Chloe’s phone rang.

••••

Pavel hands were cuffed to the arms of the chair. Renee slammed the butt of the gun into Pavel’s fingers. She heard the satisfying sound of tiny bones crunching.

Pavel howled.

“You must know that Vladimir is dead. I killed him. I stabbed him over a dozen times. Don’t think I can’t do the same thing to you.”

Renee shoved the muzzle of the gun deep into Pavel’s cheek. “Give me a name!”

“It was me! I wanted you dead. I still do.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“It is the truth.”

“You’re working with someone. Who are you working with?”

“I work alone.”

Renee shoved the directly to Pavel’s forehead, right between his full eyebrows. “Who are you working with???!!!”

She starting to pull back on the trigger.

“Charles Logan!” Pavel blurted.

“A disgraced former president? I don’t think so.”

The door opened. Chloe walked in, flanked by Cole and another CTU agent.

“Okay, I think that’s enough. This interrogation is over.” Chloe declared.

“I’m not finished,” Renee protested.

“Um. You are. Come with me.”

Renee reluctantly followed Chloe and Cole outside the interrogation capsule.

“Let’s go to my office. It’s more private.”

Chloe had stopped referring to CTU’s largest suite as ‘Hastings’s Office’. It was Chloe’s office now. Renee followed Chloe upstairs.

From the window of the suite there was a good view of the interrogation capsule. A medic was already in the room, attending to Pavel’s damaged hand and bloodied face.

Renee couldn’t take her eyes off him.

“Chloe, he’s lying. He’s protecting someone in the Russian government.”

“Maybe. But Logan is still involved. The SIM card to Tokarev’s phone was damaged when he tried to swallow it. Arlo’s been working on reconstructing the data. He’s not finished but we do know that the last call made to Tokarev’s phone was Charles Logan.”

“Then we need to interrogate Logan.”

“That could be hard.”

“We can’t stop now, Chloe.”

“There’s something else you need to know. I just got a call from Saint Andrew’s. Jack is out of surgery.”
