Title: Hitting The Jackpot
Author: marinw
Ratimg: PG
Characters: Marilyn/Phillip/Gream/Jack/Teri/Kim/Sam
Summary: Pre Day 1. Marilyn and Phillip ensure the Bauer Legacy.
Disclaimer: 24 is the property of the Fox Production Company. Etc.
A.N: I usually don’t do pre Day 1-Bauer family fic, but the issue of Josh’s (aka Himberely’s) parentage won’t leave me alone. Thanks to my beta sardonicynic.

There didn’t seem to be any corresponding rule about the best man outshining the groom. If there was, Jack would have ignored it anyway. The fact that he was even at her wedding was astonishing. Teri must have nagged him into it. At least that woman was good for something.

Yes, Jack outshone Graem by several magnatitudes. Especially now, wearing a perfectly fitted black suit and a striped silver tie. Jack’s angelic beauty was transforming itself into a more mature, rugged handsomeness. Marilyn noted how his skin was pleasingly ruddy and how his collection of crow’s feet was becoming more prominent, the result of doing god only knows what with the LAPD.

Very nice.

Graem had done his best. Marilyn’s television crush on Captain Picard had cured her of her baldness aversion. He had purchased new eyeglasses. Graem had even lost of few pounds in an attempt to keep his desk-bound stomach at bay. He seemed genuinely happy during the ceremony. Now, at the reception, he was toasting flute after flute of champagne and accepting everyone’s hearty congratulations.

Happy was good. Graem didn’t need to know. He didn’t need to know of the arrangement Marilyn had made with her new father-in-law…

Marilyn stood in Phillip’s ornate office at BXJ’s headquarters. The door was closed.

“Marilyn, before the ceremony, there is something we need to discuss. It regards securing the Bauer legacy. BXJ requires an heir. A male heir.”

A male heir? Marilyn thought. What century is this? She knew Phillip was a little eccentric and something of a control freak, but now he sounded like a lord of a medieval fiefdom, not the CEO of a modern corporation.

“I’ll do my best, Phillip.” Marilyn replied. She just couldn’t bring herself to call him ‘Dad’.

“Oh, I’m counting on you to do your part. It’s Graem I’m worried about. The poor boy has enough deficiencies, he doesn’t need to know about this particular….problem.”

“What problem?”

“Graem has a low sperm count.”

Marilyn was at a loss for words.

“I had my boys tested. All part of protecting the legacy. Graem’s bodily fluid simply isn’t up to the task. Jack’s, on the other hand-”

“Whoa, Phillip, back up. How can you know about Jack’s-”

“Would you stop interrupting me? When my baby boy defied me and joined his Rambo club, he had to undergo certain tests. Give certain…samples. I have connections. I have a sample in a safe place.” Phillip raised both hands in an expansive gesture. “The next generation of Bauers is frozen in a test tube. Wonderful. Isn’t it?”

It wasn’t a question. Marilyn didn’t answer.

“I like to call it my little Jackpot,” Phillip continued. He smiled at the unfunny pun. “For god’s sake woman, say something.”

“Let me see if I understand you correctly. You want me to -”

“Do I have to spell it out for you? I have a doctor standing by. We can do the procedure today. Carry out your wifely duty on your wedding night and Gream will be none the wiser.”

“Look, why don’t we wait awhile? Let me try to get pregnant with Gream.”

Phillip snorted. “Let’s be honest. You’re not the youngest woman around. I can practically hear the ticking of your biological clock. Mother Nature needs a helping hand.”

“What about Jack and Teri? They might have more children.”

“With the situations that boy gets into, it’s only a matter of time before he comes home in a body bag or missing parts of his anatomy. And even if that mousy wife of his did spit out a boy, Jack wouldn’t let him anywhere near me. I need a grandson I can influence.”

“No. I won’t do it.” That statement took all the courage Marilyn had. As she said it her voice shook and her legs, already precariously perched on their stilettos, turned to water.

“Then the wedding is off.”

“Graem can’t live without my fatherly approval. The legacy must be ensured. If you won’t do your part then Graem won’t have my blessing any more than Jack did when he ran off with Teri. He won’t marry you without my blessing. You want to be part of the Bauer empire, don’t you? You like going to all the BXJ functions, mingling with high society. I know you like that house I bought Graem for a wedding present. You also like his standing at BXJ with you at his side. If you want all of that, then these are my terms.”

“You’re a monster.”

“I’ve been called worse things. Come now, Marilyn, it’s perfectly obvious that you’ve always wanted Jack. You can’t have him, so you’re settling for his brother. Think of this as a way of always having a piece of the golden boy with you.”

Marilyn started to cry. She could feel the mascara leaking down her carefully carefully made-up pale cheeks.

“Stop blubbering, woman. Agree to my terms and you and Graem can have everything you want. The clinic is in this building. And I know you’re at the right point in your cycle. I checked.”

“You checked? My cycle is none of your business.”

“If you want to be part of the family, then it damn well is my business. The wedding is in two days. We’re running out of time.”

The music had changed to s slow, schmaltzy waltz. Looking over Graem’s shoulder, Marilyn could see that Jack and Teri were now out on the dance floor. They danced slowly, both smiling while gazing deep into each other’s eyes. It was disgusting.

Teri was rather mousy. Phillip was right about that. Jack could have done so much better.

Getting knocked up in her first year of college. How skanky can you get?

Looking beyond the dance floor, Marilyn noticed Same sitting at one of the tables, deep in conversation with a guest Marilyn did recognize.. Her glance shifted to the eight-year-old girl sitting rather boredly at the same table. The girl had alabaster skin, huge blue eyes, and very pale blond hair. It was obvious which parent she resembled.

Kim is a pretty girl, Marilyn concluded. She felt reassured. Seeing little Kim gave her an idea of the shape of things to come.

The doctor had told her that there was no guarantee the procedure would work the first time. Marilyn knew better. She could already feel the change within herself.

Tonight, she would be with Gream. Their love-making would be adequate. That was all that was required.

Marilyn had secured her place in the BXJ empire, taking a tiny piece of the Jackpot in exchange.

It wasn’t such a bad deal, after all.

Dude, I think my skin just tried to crawl right off my body.

In the best possible way, of course. ;D

Papa Bauer does have the creepy factor, dosn't he? I think he would try to control every aspect of the family.

Thank you for reading.
