Why are some fandoms bigger than others? Why do some fandoms go on for years after their Canon is more or less complete (Such as X-Files or Buffy) while other fandoms are tiny?
I ask because I write in the 24 fandom. This show has violence, angst, death, family issues, doomed romances, and one of the greatest (and hottest) Tragic Heroes in the history of TV Tragic Heroes. What more could a fangirl want?
The show is very popular, two-year hiatus not withstanding. This fandom has some wonderfull, thoughtfull, intelligent writing. (And other fics, not so much, but I don’t have to read those) But we are so LITTLE. Stuff pops up my f-list far less frequently than the other communities I belong to, namely Lost and Battlestar Galactica. You would think that 24 was some obscure cable show that aired for one season back in 1990’s.
Any theories?
