“I’ll take the couch.”

“You just got out of the hospital.”

“I’ll be fine.” Jack winced slightly as he tenderly sat down on the sofa. He surveyed the apartment suite that had been his home ever since he had gone to out-patient status at the John Keeler Rehabilitation Centre. It was as neat as he had left it. Renee had made a point of tidying up after herself.

“The doctor said you could leave the hospital if you stayed in bed. The couch is not a bed.”

“You came to find me. You saved my life. I’m not going to let you sleep on the couch.”

“Fine. We’ll both use the bed. It’s a big bed”

Jack took a moment to consider the logic. “Yeah.”

Renee had outsmarted Jack. No easy task. Once she heard the sound of his snoring Renee quietly left the bedroom and sat down on the couch. She re-arranged the packages of dressings, bottles of medication, and tubes of antibiotic ointment spread out on the coffee table.

So now she was his nurse.

Fair enough. She had stabbed him.

The wound had been superficial. That in itself hadn’t been enough to put Jack back in the hospital. It had been the cumulative effects of the stabbing, and the torture, and the tazers, and the bullets that had come perilously close to penetrating his flak vest, and his still-rebooting immune system and…

Renee picked up a bottle of Demoral. Full minus the one pill she had coaxed Jack into swallowing.

She stared at the remaining pills.

Tempting. Very, very tempting,

She put the bottle back on the table.

In the past couple of days Renee had regained something that approximated self-respect. She liked the feeling. She didn’t want to lose it.

Renee had also promised herself that she would not give Vladimir one more moment of thought. That self-imposed mandate took a ridiculous amount of discipline. So far she was managing.

Renee slipped off her boots and spread her legs out on the leather sofa. She pulled a blanket over herself.

She spent the next two hours staring at the ceiling and listening to the comforting and never-ending symphony of traffic.

New York was the city that never slept. Renee had been taking that cliché a bit too literally.

She closed her eyes.

He had entered Renee’s mind when she had almost drifted off to sleep. The hard perimeter she had tried to erect around her mind had become just about as effective as the perimeters attempted by CTU.

When she had left the FBI Renee had been given the name of a well-regarded psychologist. She had blown off the recommendation. At this moment Renee decided to call this person when she returned to Washington. Whenever that would be.

It was almost dawn.

Renee got off the couch and tiptoed towards the bedroom.

She sat on the edge of the large double bed. On the opposite side of the bed Jack lay on his side facing the window. His sleeping form was partially illuminated by the florescent lights and signs from the street outside. His long-sleeved white t-shirt was thin and light enough to show the outline of his well-developed arms and shoulders.

He had a face she couldn’t stop looking at.

Renee had rescued him. Twice. Did that make Jack hers? Was he now a prize she could claim?

You have me. Renee had clung to those words when Jack had spoken them, even though she despised herself for being so needy. Renee wasn’t feeling needy now. She was feeling something entirely different, a feeling she didn’t want to analyze because it felt too good.

Still wearing her jeans and t-shirt, Renee quietly slipped under the light bedcovers. Carefully she moved next to Jack’s back and rested her head on the bed’s one unoccupied pillow. She draped her left arm over Jack’s shoulder until her hand rested on his pectorals. She stroked the area very gently, knowing that most of his torso was covered in large brown and purple bruises.

Renee was re-assured by the steady rise and fall of his chest and underneath her hand she could feel the strong heartbeat. He felt warm but not feverish. Good.

She nudged her legs closer to Jack until her denim-clad knees made contact with the back of Jack’s sweat pant-clad thighs.

She tried to remember why she hadn’t returned his phone calls. Embarrassment? Pride?

It didn’t matter now.

“Mmmrrppphhh.” Jack mumbled.

“Good morning.”

“What time is it?” Jack asked groggily.

Jack noticed Renee’s arm draped over his chest. He covered her hand with his own.

“It’s almost time for your pills. I’ll get you some water.” Renee said.

“I’m fine. Stay.”

“Okay. For a few more minutes.”

“I’m glad you’re here.”

“You have me,” Renee said.

“You have me too,” Jack answered.

awe, thank you for commenting.

Jack is approaching Day 6 in terms of unsustainable canon injuries. True, he he hasn't just stumbled out of Prison like in Day 6, but he has recently recovered from a serious illness, something the writers have COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN about. Oh well, moving on...

Day 8 isn't that inspiring to me either. There is much richer material elsewhere in the canon.

This is great! Exactly what I needed to read today. :) I really liked this line, because it's so them:

He had a face she couldn’t stop looking at.

And I thought this line was very clever:
The hard perimeter she had tried to erect around her mind had become just about as effective as the perimeters attempted by CTU.
Heh. Excellent.
