A/N: It’s Minor Character time again. There are far too many to keep track of, but every so often there’s one that captures my imagination. Next up: Miriam Henderson Plots Her Revenge…

He had been a nice man.

His brother had told Brady not to talk to strangers. Mark had told Brady that many times.

“I’m not a stranger. I’m a police man.” The Nice Man had a pretty voice.

“You were working on your computer. Do you remember what you were doing?” Brady could not say no to that pretty voice.

“You did great, Brady.” Brady was terrified by the scary man with the beard. The gunshots had been very loud. The Nice Man’s simple statement made Brady feel good.

Mark had always taken care of Brady. Every night he made Brady his dinner. Mark told Brady never to go near the stove because the stove was hot and Brady could get a burn. The Nice Man had a burn on his hand. A bad one. Maybe he got it because he didn’t have a brother to take care of him.

The Nice Man had told the truth: After Brady had helped him, another man took him to see his brother. The hospital was scary but Brady was brave. The Nice Man had shown Brady that he could be brave.

“You always take care of me,” Said Brady. Mark was lying in bed. Brady rocked from one foot to another.

“We’re going to have to change things, Brady.” Mark said. His voice was small and weak.

Brady tapped his thumb and forefinger together exactly seven times. It had to be a prime number. It wouldn’t work otherwise.

Brady didn’t like to change things. Changing things made him scared.

When Mark got home from the hospital his arm was in a sling and he couldn’t cook Brady’s dinner. They had to eat cereal and things out of cans.

Brady’s computer was gone. The men had taken it away.

That was horrible. That was the most horrible thing that could happen. Now Brady didn’t have anything to do.

Mark tried to explain. “I had to make a deal, Brady. If I didn’t give them the computer they would have taken us away. We wouldn’t be able to live here anymore. We would have to live somewhere else. Somewhere you wouldn’t like.”

“Because we did something wrong. And we got caught.”

“But I need my computer. If I don’t have my computer people will think I’m stupid.”

“Brady. Listen to me. You are not stupid. You can penetrate any firewall. You can break any encryption key. That makes you smart. Smarter than almost anybody. Don’t ever let anybody tell you that you’re stupid. No matter what happens, you have to remember that. We’re still together. I can still take care of you. That’s what’s important now.”

It was good that Mark could still take care of him. Mark knew that Brady wasn’t stupid. The Nice Man knew that too.

But Mark wasn’t quite the same anymore. And Brady never saw the Nice Man with the pretty voice again.
